Green Certifications & Sustainability
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification ensures that the paper comes from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits. Papers bearing the FSC label follow strict chain-of-custody rules.
PCF means the paper is processed without using chlorine-based bleaching agents, resulting in a cleaner manufacturing process and lower environmental impact.
The recycling (Mobius loop) symbol shows that the paper is recyclable, and when paired with a legend, indicates the percentage of recycled fibre used in its production.
Green Seal certifies that the paper contains a minimum of 30% post-consumer fibre and meets certain environmental and performance criteria. It’s recognised in procurement guidelines and states stewardship.
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is another independent certification for sustainable forestry. While FSC is more globally recognised in many design/print markets, PEFC is a credible alternative, especially in regions with small forest owners.
Types of Paper & Uses
Uncoated paper has a natural surface and better suitability for writing, stationery, and
ink absorption.
Coated paper has a surface treatment (glossy, matte, silk) that increases smoothness,
sheen, and print clarity — especially for images.
Fine papers are premium papers used for text and cover work, available in finishes like
smooth, vellum, wove, linen, etc. They offer high opacity, print fidelity, and tactile
quality.
Offset papers are used in offset printing, where ink is transferred via an intermediate
surface (e.g., rubber blanket) rather than direct contact.
Consider the following:
1. Purpose / medium (document, invitation, packaging, art).
2. Print method (digital, offset, letterpress, embossing, foil).
3. Finish preference (smooth, textured, specialty).
4. Sustainability credentials (recycled content, FSC, PEFC, etc.).
5. Budget and supply considerations.
